Chopping Onions Without the Tears!

Good Morning!

I have something crazy to tell you about. I don't even know if it's real, but we'll discuss it and see....

Have you ever read The Help? If not, you totally should. Or see the movie. It was really good too. Really, you should read the book and then see the movie...

Anyhow, in the movie, Aibileen tells Skeeter the secret to chopping onions without tears.

Aibileen: Shoot! That's easy. You tell to hold a match stick between her teeth.
Skeeter: Is it lit?
Aibileen: No, ma'am.

So last week I decided to try it. I was about halfway through cutting some onions when my eyes started burning and watering. I thought back to that line in the movie and grabbed some matches... I swear, it worked!

I mean, it didn't work 100%, but they were already burning when I decided to try it, so that probably played a part. It definitely got better once I started using the match and made it totally manageable to finish the task. I really think it works! Could it be just in my head??

I did a little research, and found some other (crazy/silly/strange) ways people recommend to avoid tears:

How do you avoid tears??? Do you have another crazy idea or have you tried any of the ones listed above?? I'd love to hear your secrets!

thanks for the tips!! I don't know of any ideas to prevent it, but when my eyes start watering, I put my face in the freezer with my eyes open!! Sounds weird, but for some reason the cold air makes the pain go away!!!

Well isn't that crazy? I haven't heard of any of those techniques. Usually I just use my Quick Chef to dice up onions, otherwise I would bawl like a baby!

I have been told that keeping your mouth shut is what keeps you from inhaling the gases and crying. So putting matches between your lips, or holding water in your mouth would force you to keep your mouth shut. :)

I keep my onions in the fridge and I swear it works! I just watched The Help and I wonderred if the matchstick worked!

I've heard that the root end is the part that makes you cry, so if you can avoid cutting that end until the very end, maybe that helps.
